Reproductive cloning most commonly works through SCNT, or Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer. SCNT is the process that takes the nucleus of cell and it is then put into an egg that does not have a nucleus. This then produces an embryo clone which undergoes a series of development with chemicals. This embryo clone is then placed into the uterus of a female animal. The genes of the clone are identical to the genes of the original animal that the cell came from. Therapeutic cloning is mainly for medical conditions. It uses stem cells to grow healthy tissues and organs that can then be used to replace the damaged tissues caused by diseases. Similar to reproductive cloning, therapeutic cloning also uses the process of SCNT. Gene cloning pretty much self-explanatory, the definition is in its name. It is the recreation of DNA segments, or genes.
Each of these areas of cloning have a specific use and place in the world. Eventually, we will be able to clone a whole human being. There is much research that still needs to be done before we get to that point, but we are well on our way. We have been able to clone at least eighteen different mammals, which is a great start. Cloning will progress as time goes on and it will be less of a fantasy thought. One day, it might even become something that everyone gets used to.
